A few decent passages, but after a while you see a predictable pattern of pulling self-contradicting passages out of one's behind in a lame attempt to sound "mystical" or "full of ancient wisdom". Something like, "If one wants to feel warm, he must first seek the cold." Or, "In order to become quenched, one must become thirsty." Seriously, just reach up your backside and pull out a dozen or two of your own passages. Then, sit in a lotus position and recite the crap back to gullible, soul-searching yuppies. Profit. This wasn't a long book, and I only made it about one-fourth of the way through and I absolutely could not take any more.

I read this along with the Chinese version (with the support of a Taoist Chinese friend). He had a poor opinion of this translation, but it led to some good discussions about what to change it to.

I liked the visual layout of this book and the back endnotes were perfect to help give me some depth to each chapter.

Definitely not the kind of book to read in one go, but the kind of book to think about, read, reread at many different times in your life (as Le Guin stated she did), as you're sure to get something different out of it every time. I think it needs to marinate my soul a bit more to truly understand the impact it could have.
I particularly enjoyed reading about Le Guin's translation process (despite not even knowing the original language) and the different choices she made throughout.

«...desea ser pequeño.»

No hace falta destacar.

An important book that everyone should read at some point in our lives - it can profoundly change us, or just move us with the beautiful poetry. Every person will take something different from the experience.
