With serious competition, possibly the greatest play of the 20th century. It’s rare to find a text that can make me belly laugh, cry and gasp all in one tube trip. The skill required to write a play like this, essentially the definitive play about the AIDS crisis, yet also a magical realist analysis of America, of faith, a deep dive into the psychology of one of the 20th c’s most interesting figures (Roy Cohn) that should sustain a whole play but that is instead one of six or seven threads, each as developed as the last.

A play with huge hope for the future, even in a world that god has abandoned. That even in its indictment of god has such huge nuance in terms of faith, in terms of fate. The human cowardice in abandoning Pryor versus the human bravery of helping Cohn. The sheer isolation and yet the incredible comradeship. The inextricable American-ness, speaking in quotations, but also these quotations are camped, queered, and as everything veers off course is that bad? Is it damning? Or is it liberating? The angels don’t know.

I litterally hate Louis with every fibre of my being. Absolute scum of the earth.
