A fun adventure story to read aloud, with lots of great historical information. Content warning: there were some brief instances of racist language toward Chinese miners we had to discuss, but it was easy to talk about (or skip over if that’s your preference).

This was such a fun and entertaining read for our study over the Gold Rush time period. My kids loved the adventure and all the funny scenes woven throughout. I loved the time relevant language and was a great enhancement to our homeschool (4th/5th grade). The main characters have a lot of admirable character traits which also provided some good conversations with my kids on humanistic levels. Great book!

I loved this charming adventure of the California Gold Rush through the eyes of 12 year old Jack and his butler. They travel the ocean, solve puzzles and use their wits, kindness, an intelligence to get through sticky and dangerous situations. A very fun read with lots of lively history.
