I guess I figured out pretty early on who the murderer was, although the wrap-up was a bit hurried. I loved the descriptions of the town and the characters, and this is one of the first books in a while that made me laugh out loud. Honestly just hysterical.

CrAaAaZzyyyy author-slash-stalker. Nope. I'm good. We all see through your ruse. You can't play victim when you're the bully, clearly. Disgusting.

2.5 stars. Interesting premise, kind of terrible execution. But 5 stars for the cover!

I thoroughly enjoyed that. You don't often run across funny mysteries aimed at teens. This author is going on my auto list.

Ultimately, I really enjoyed this and thought it was dark, yet funny at the same time. But I'm not even sure why but I was LIVID at how stupid and idiotic this town was-how can EVERY.SINGLE.PERSON think that murders get solved within a day? It's called television and majority of people, even a little podunk town in the Midwest, has seen a crime show and knows about evidence and little details. Also the whole insane asylum section was weird and maybe I don't know a lot, but are there any that actually work like that anymore? Ok, rant over. I really did like this book though, I just found myself being ridiculously frustrated with characters and not entirely sure that they were believable.

I read this book before I got on Goodreads and before I knew anything about the author. I picked this up at my library because it sounded really interesting. My review will not be biased by any opinions of the author, this will purely be about the novel itself.

I thought that this story was really entertaining and fun. The characters are all really unique, and have a way of sticking in your mind. The murder/mystery aspect was pretty good in my opinion, I remember being on the edge of my seat the entire time, and I was pretty shocked by the ending. People who read a lot of thrillers probably wouldn't enjoy this quite as much, but this was one of my firsts, so it's pretty good for newer readers of the genre.

Was this written by a teenager?

Based on the blurb, i expected this to be a sort of campy, teen-version of Fargo. Brutal murder, tiny midwest/plains town, inept cops, etc., all slathered with a layer of dark humor.

What i got was an alternate universe in which adults are such complete morons that it's amazing they haven't all starved to death because they can't figure out how to get a forkful of food from their plate to their mouth. I get, in a YA novel, making the teenagers the protagonists and playing them against the adults, but not a single adult in this book seemed to have the reasoning skills of a preschooler. For example, the Sheriff has decided whom he wants to be guilty of the crime, and ignores all evidence to the contrary. Then he proceeds to ignore evidence that he could quite easily use to support his theory as well, just to show that adults don't listen to teens.

And i got the feeling, while i was reading, that the author didn't decide until 3/4 of the way through who was actually guilty of the crime. Various people are set up as having motive, opportunity, or both, but it's all so half-hearted until suddenly it's obviously this one person and not the other suspects.

In all, there was very little worthwhile in this book. While i can imagine teens enjoying a book that presents all adults as self-absorbed incompetents, i wouldn't even recommend it to such a reader because there's nothing else good about it.

Spoiler Worst yet, they blame video games for turning a person into a murderer. Video games! What is this, 1995?
