I read this as part of the Townsends Book Club

There were some dry parts but some very interesting parts and some funny parts.

Ben Franklin was an obnoxious personality. I think I might have smacked him every time I saw him.

I had to read this book for literature several years ago. While I liked it at first, I thought it was boring, and veeeeeeeeryyyyyyyy drawn out.

This man is one of- if not THE - GOAT. Although a contentious title, he more than has the qualities and resume to deserve it. I mean come on: writer, scientist, inventor, statesman, diplomat, printer, publisher, political philosopher. Drafter of the Constitution. First Postmaster General. He had excellency in everything he decided to put his mind to. Most interestingly about this autobiography was his modesty, truly. He would turn down opportunities to be a Governor or Colonel when he did not feel qualified. Although he refused to resign from a post when prodded to, saying that they could take it from him if they wanted! (he was elected unanimously the following term)

I have been surprisingly into autobiographies lately and this one tells the tale of a truly extraordinary individual. Coming from a huge family with almost no money as he ran away from home to pursue other business ventures, to doing things like making the first library and university in the United States. I will admit, I wanted to read the more scandalous parts of his life, primarily about his debauchery. There was a touch of this included but not as much as I had hoped, fair.

This was inspirational for me in the hard-work department. Everyone could use a little of Ben in themselves. I am astounded by his impact and reading this work he felt so friendly even after hundreds of years have passed.

Interesting vignettes into the life of Benjamin Franklin and the pre-revolution American colonies.

I’m thinking Autobiographies aren’t my thing. I need to read another book about Ben to be sure.
