Whoa that was hard work. I dislike putting ratings on memoirs because you can't rate someones life, but holy crap has McGowan had a lot of shit to deal with.
So many triggers in this one - but that's not surprising, I would say pretty much everyone knows what this is going to be about (abuse).
There is a lot of rage (rightfully so) and a call to arms effectively (also understandable, although it comes across like an agenda push).
The majority of the writing/narration (McGowan herself does the audiobook) kept me engaged, but every now and then I'd fall out of it. In between memories and stories she can get a little condescending, which confused me, as I would like to think that the majority of people reading her book, are not hate reading it, but reading it for insight into her story.
For all those odd moments though, it's very impactful, she's a natural storyteller, and she's right that we need change. BIG change.
