im so undecided about this whole book. the issues i have with it: the characters and plot lines ultimately feel very silly and made up. though the emotions feel very real. it definitely gets repetitive. enjoyed the contrast between the main character and reva. but oof - the lead up to 9/11 was heavy.

It follows a very ignorant and privileged wealthy white woman and her depression. This book is very candid and accurate and creative with its depiction of depression, but it does so from a very privileged perspective. Read this book! And learn about how depression impacts people who are not white and rich.

4.5 stars. This was truly wacky. This book is not for everyone, and in fact, it’s probably not for most people. It does not feature one likable character. BUT, while it was bleak and terrible, it was also super funny, dark, and well-written. It checked all of my sad-girl lit boxes. I probably would have given this 5 stars if it wasn’t for the cliched ending. Also, Julia Whelan was an AMAZING narrator for this on audio.

P.S. content warnings galore with this one!

“(…) a circular planet covered in creatures and things growing, all of it spinning slowly on an axis created by what – some freak accident?”

Wow, this was a ride. I never thought a book with a grieving main character could be so amusing. The experience of reading “My Year of Rest and Relaxation” was equal parts insane and hilarious.
