Scott Pilgrim vs The World by Bryan Lee O'Malley levels you into another continuation of the Scott Pilgrim series. This volume has a lot more extra stuff that didn't make the movie which was interesting. This book, the second in the series, is where the author really finds his voice and lets the characters grow. We get some backstory on the past relationship of Scott Pilgrim and Kim Pine and an early glimpse of many other characters in the series.
Our protagonist Scott Pilgrim is continuing his journey battling Ramona's evil ex-boyfriends, being in a band, being in a relationship and not having a job. He's pretty much living the typical life of your average 23-year-old Canadian slacker, be it being pummelled by a movie star's evil ex and then daring him into performing a skateboard stunt or having his heartstrings tugged on by the imminent return of the ex that broke his heart and went on to become a rock star.
O'Malley's run pokes fun at the banalities of life while making you feel like a twenty-something kid again. The art is charming and original (even if you read Japanese comics). The diverse cast of characters is unique archetypes that keep you hoping they will return in every panel. It may confuse those unfamiliar with video game pop culture, but not enough to distract one from the story.

jesus christ this did not age well. however, for a time capsule of the time it was originally made, it's eh. still, good art tho.
