Part historical fiction, part fantasy. The story is incredible- made us laugh, made us cry, and the ending is just... so good. I wish I could read this for the first time all over again. Both a readaloud & audiobook- both excellent.

I loved this touching story that combines elements of historical fiction and friendship along with a monster.

I can really see why other people loved this book, but I think its just a case of it not being for me. It just missed by a little bit in a few different area's but I would 100% hand this off to someone else who this was more in their wheelhouse.

I loved this book so much. The story was unique and refreshing in the vein of victorian-era stories like the novels of Frances Hodgson Burnett. It's just so charming. I couldn't put it down and want to read more of Jonathan Auxier's writing now. The story definitely touches on the hard realities of life for underprivileged children in Victorian England and I loved the justice theme. Such a delightful and moving tale of love, loss, friendship, loyalty, magic, courage, and triumph of right over wrong.

Highly recommend the audio version!

omg! so good!

Nan Sparrow was saved as an orphan and take care of The Sweep who loved her and took care of her until the day she disappeared. Now she working for mean and abusive master who terrorizes a group of young climbers into working for him. One day an accident awakens a lump of char that she has kept from Sweep. The char becomes a Golem she names Charlie. Charlie has the power to heal and bring life while loosing some of his own.

Nan struggles to teach and care for Charlie as he grows older and larger while she deals with the hardships of poverty in london (the fog, the pollution, the child labor, the poorhouses/orphanages, etc.). She searches for a way to bring her story and those of other child sweeps to the city as she watches her fellows suffer. Made me cry.

*honestly the plot is a mix of Dickens, Newsies, etc*
