This is a beautiful story told brilliantly. It seems like a child's version of a Dickens' tale. If reading to or with a young person, know in advance there are some difficult, heart breaking moments.

I loved this book. A beautiful story with a beautiful message. NaN is a complex heroine who is easy to love. Recommended for readers 11 and up.

I don't often give a book five stars, but Sweep was so beautifully written and so moving and funny that it deserves it. The story deals with some really hard topics, but does so in a way that is careful and age-appropriate. The prose is beautiful, the character voice strong and endearing, and the story itself both moving and compelling. My only (minor) complaint was that some of the language was very American (blocks, sidewalks, etc) but it didn't good job of bringing Victorian London to life. Sweep is sad and moving while still being incredibly funny and hopeful. It's a beautiful balance of acknowledging the hard things in life and facing them head on while still drawing out hope and joy.
Minor: Adult/minor relationship, Child abuse, Child death, Death, Antisemitism, Grief, Murder, Fire/Fire injury, Abandonment, and Classism
Though there are a lot of hard themes in this book, they're dealt with very carefully and well. It's a middle grade book, so it walks the line between hard topics while still being suitable for a young audience. Jonathan Auxier does this really well.zbmorgan's review against another edition

A terrifying yet magical portrait of what it’s like to be a chimney sweep- but with a magical friend. This book took a little to get into: it’s start is very typical ‘fantasy poverty’ but it really picks up when some regular characters arrive. A wonderful twist on the golem legend and entertaining historical fantasy fiction. Read the authors notes at the end.
