I honestly don't know what to rate this, so let's go with three stars. It's not often that I'm in the mood for historical fiction, but I guess I was now since it took me only two days to read this book.
I really appreciate the writing and the amount of research the author has done. Mostly I felt like the pacing was too slow (we really didn't need to read about so many goddamned dust storms) yet the ending was incredibly rushed and it felt soooo cheap. That being said, I still cried like a baby. However, the ending should've been longer to properly show all the character development.

This novel is absolutely inspired and truly touching in ways I couldn't have anticipated at all. The sheer beauty and raw deep emotions portraited in so many different scenarios are so intense they sometimes made me gasp for air. Kristin Hannah is absolutely a fantastic writer, I'm a fan now for sure, looking forward to getting to know other worlds through her lenses. This story was not only a big page-turner for me - I practically devoured it whenever I could - but also, in a heart-touching way, was so intrinsically inspiring with unthinkable acts of courage and humbled me to think of what it really takes to feel deep gratefulness. Took my breath away, and some emotional tears along the read.

I absolutely hated this book. I’m only giving it 3 stars because it isn’t written horribly. It’s so slow start and is just straight up depressing from the start. I had 0 pleasure reading it and the only reason I didn’t DNF it was because I was hoping there might be something at the end to redeem it. There wasn’t. If I want to read depressing stories from the past, I’ll read an accurate nonfiction retelling of the facts. It was awful and I don’t understand why I tortured myself to endure the whole thing.
