Laat ik deze recensie beginnen met een eerlijke uitspraak van mezelf: Ik heb nog geen enkel ander deel in de Gone serie gelezen. Niet in de eerste serie en niet in de tweede. Ik besef me dus terdege dat ik heel veel opbouw, van zowel de wereld, als de karakters gemist heb. Maar, ik heb dit boek als recensie exemplaar ontvangen en wilde het toch lezen, en eens kijken of het zich dan staande zou houden.
En ik kan je alvast zeggen: dat doet het niet. Dus, mocht je de rest van de serie niet gelezen hebben, dan is het niet echt raadzaam dit boek wel op te pakken. Er zijn heel veel personages en er wordt eigenlijk nauwelijks iets over hun geschiedenis verteld. Ongetwijfeld geen probleem, had je de rest van de serie maar moeten lezen. De world building en mythologie is wat makkelijker te doorgronden en daar heb ik wel een goed beeld van gekregen, ondanks dat ik de eerdere delen nooit gelezen heb.
En die verhouding wordt eigenlijk doorgetrokken in het hele boek. Dit boek bestaat voor 90 procent, als het geen 95 is, uit actie en een opsomming van manieren waarop je mensen kan martelen. (Waarbij niet alle manieren wetenschappelijk kloppen, maar laten we het daar maar helemaal niet over hebben...) De gruwelijkheden gingen eigenlijk al vrij snel het ene oog in en het andere oog weer uit, zonder indruk te maken of me ook maar iets te doen.
De emotionele reacties van de slachtoffers en mutanten, de doorwerking van al die gebeurtenissen, waar ik eigenlijk heel benieuwd naar was, die schitterde in afwezigheid. Heel af en toe was er een throw away line die beschreef hoe een karakter zich voelde, maar dat was het dan ook wel.
Dus, ongetwijfeld een leuk boek voor de liefhebbers van de Gone serie en de liefhebbers van actiefilms met zonder duidelijk plot, maar ik heb niet echt het gevoel dat ik de rest van de serie moet gaan lezen. Jammer.

Amazing action and characters, a bit clunkier in the writing than the first book but still a fun read.

I love how Michael grant is so skilled at capturing the essence of a child’s mind. He is very good at incorporating the immaturity, innocence, and perspective of characters around the age 17. He also adds pop culture reference that I always enjoy.
My only problem with the book was it made some of the bigger characters in book 1 seem almost nonexistent now. Such as Justin and barely any Sam. Still enjoyed the read and the messed up society that started with the Faze.

2018 review:
this is the 17th book by michael grant that I have read, so obviously i'm a fan. unfortunately I didn't like this as much as I have liked some of his previous books. rtc (maybe. probably).

To be fair I finished the book after having one hell of a migraine and my head is still scrambled. Dillon was absolutely terrifying but was so separate from the original book that it felt like the monster of the week. An absolutely delusional and terrifying monster, seriously the comedian aspect was so freaky when he was trying to write an act and then having people believe they were zombies?!?!. Shade bringing down the ranch was a nice touch. Malik going psycho on Dillon was terrifying and I feel so bad for him and his morph being the ability to inflict that kind of pain on people. Him and shade getting together at the end is scary to me. Cruz and Armo seem cute. Very interested in Francis’s ability to morph into the same dimension as the dark watchers. I think she will take Malik there to kill them. Was ASO 7 expected? I don’t think so? Also the nuked at the end, what are we leading too. Vincent’s demise was so quick too for such a terrifying creature in monster. Astrid and Sam deserve a break and I hope they can finally kill drake. Will I see my edilio again?? I think Sam will end up taking the rock too, along with the hint that Astrid will.
