Beckett is erg grappig :-)

Pluspuntje dat een deel in Amsterdam speelt, direct daarna teniet gedaan doordat het een beetje lijkt alsof de auteur dat allemaal vanaf Google Maps heeft gedaan...

Artemis Fowl was one of my very favorite series growing up, his twins a source of unending curiosity in later chapters. This continuation did not disappoint. I can't tell you how pleased I was to meet Myles and Beckett. Opposite in every way, their banter lifts the Fowl family to new heights as they evade equally entertaining villains. I couldn't stop laughing.

So I have been a fan of Eoin Colfer since I found the Artemis Fowl books when I was 11, 16 years ago. I have always enjoyed his writing and I love delving into the world he has created.

When picking up this book, the latest in the Fowl storyline, I was nervous and excited. I had no idea what to expect because it had been so long since he'd written about my favorite characters.

Sadly, those characters don't make much of an appearance. However, the story was still very good! I don't think anything will ever compete with the original Artemis Fowl, but this book was definitely still a worthwhile read!

The one thing I noticed about it compared to the originals, is there is more of a childlike feel to the story. Whereas Artemis Fowl came off very mature. I haven't decided if this is a good thing or bad thing yet, I'm still mulling that over! I definitely would recommend checking or out though!

I nearly gave up. The writing style was so tedious. It seems Eoin Colfer's trying too hard to be humorous. Just skip away all those 'spin-offs'! I have no interest in what weapon Lord Teddy Bleedham-Drye (nice touch, btw) is using! Sometimes I'm painfully reminded of the hard hours spent navigating through Artemis Fowl and the Atlantic Complex again. I even got on goodreads to read the reviews if this book is worth it, or if it's a waste of time. High ratings all the way. I wondered if we've been reading the wrong book...

But the second half was slightly better. At least we're seeing more of the Fowl twins, which are interesting characters. Myles is just like Artemis, but less experienced; Beckett is the action boy and animal whisperer who's actually quite smart but doesn't show it. The highlights are mostly brief mentions of old characters and how they are now -- precisely the reason I'm reading this!
SpoilerYay Holly! Wish we can see more of you!

I stuck with Artemis Fowl till the end even if I got bored by the writing from time to time. Mostly for the characters. One thing: it's not easy to write characters who shine fully, have depth and quirks, and make readers interested in the series enough to keep reading despite all other shortcomings. For this, I salute the author.
(Perhaps the need to know what the Twins are up to next will prompt me to read the next book! Who knows)

Brilliant! I had no idea this book was coming, and as someone who obsessively read all the books as a kid, it was an amazing surprise to be able to return to the Fowl world once again.

The cast of characters was creative and beyond colorful. Myles and Beckett forming the perfect team, split down the middle a little something like Artemis and Orion. Complete with their own secret twin language, and bumping their scars together as a sort of secret handshake. A mixture of brains and brawn, composed and wacky.

The unreliable narrator was a blast, spoilering you at random, making you want to reach the points that they would inevitably tease when you least expected it. The strange series of bullet point lists in the midst of the delightfully descriptive paragraphs. The deadly nun and the bizarre long armed Duke obsessed with eternal life made for some of the weirdest, most interesting villains. Utterly unpredictable and fun.

I can't wait to see what the Fowl Twins get themselves into next! And I also can't wait for more hints of Artemis Fowl the II and his adventures as an adult in space.

Loved it. But I do have complaints! Miles isn't sufficiently different than Artemis. He's quite adorable, but basically Artemis 2.0. Also Lazulai wasn't well developed enough!
