I read this book in fifth grade. My teacher loved to read to us. This was one of the books she read; I loved it.

Dial-A-Ghost is one of two Eva Ibbotson books I never read as a kid. It was physically at the library one day when I was passing by so I figured it was fate.
If you’ve read any of her other books in this vein then you have an idea of what this one is like: emphasis on being sensible and kind, ghosts deserve respect even when they’re scary because that’s just how ghosts are, a charming English Side setting and a fun if not a little underdeveloped cast of characters.
The villains in this one were particularly ghastly. They always have a ghoulish veneer, but his cousins were real pieces of work. I really liked the family of ghosts though they do fall to the wayside in favor of the youngest once the mix-up happens. I wish there had been a better twist. They always are a little too convenient, this one was a lotta too convenient.
I read Eva Ibbotson’s books when I am desperate to have a read not disappoint me. They all are some level of comfort for me. Even this one, which I’d never read before, gave me the same feeling immediately. I chalk it up to Ibbotson’s consistency in writing style.
Read it, the time will go by fast.

This book would be great for younger people around the age of 9-12.

Dial-A-Ghost was a fast paces leisurely read. Not a very complex plot line and easily predictable but as far as it being a book I would have enjoyed as a child, it hit the mark. The story follows two seperate ghost families who are searching for places to make their permanent residence when they come across a ghost adoption agency. Also another main character is a orphan boy named Oliver who inherits a frightening mansion/castle. Oliver and the ghosts meet and the story unfolds, simply, from there. If you are looking for a fast, fun young read this isn't the worst you could choose.

Read this as a kid and I remember I used to really like this story. Listened to this again as an adult and it was still magical and spooky. A real delight.

LOVED Which Witch? and The Secret of Platform 13 years ago. This one didn't live up to those memories, but it was ok.

We enjoyed this book so much! Wonderful characters, great plot, wicked fun. Ibbotson is so much fun!
