In May, I visited the Catacombs in Paris. It’s pretty amazing and very creepy. As a true lover of Halloween and all things horror, I’ve always been obsessed with the Catacombs. This book was much like my disappointment with The Suicide Forest, also by Jeremy Bates. I didn’t like them for almost the same reason. The books end up in a place I didn’t appreciate. Will I read another in the series? For sure. But maybe not more than one more if they continue in this vain.

A group of friends heads into the catacombs after one found a mysterious video while exploring. Two of them are regular catacomb explorers while the other two are newbies. When they get in there, the group comes across some weird people. Their goal is to get to the place they found the camera and investigate a missing woman, but their path is waylaid by some of the strangers in the tunnels.

In true horror book fashion, calamity ensues and our group gets much more than they bargained for. Not only do they get a little lost, they’re also running for their lives. A true nightmare unfolds beneath the Cory of Lights.

I didn’t love this book but I will move forward in reading more from this series. Have you read any from this series? I’d love your thoughts.

Meh. 2.5 stars, I guess? It wasn’t an awful read. It was quick, and the writing was decent. It wasn’t, however, scary. There were almost too many answers for it to be truly scary, if that makes sense...and they came far too early. It felt like a b horror film.

I was recommended this book on Amazon while I was looking at more Jeff Long books. It is kind of like Jeff Long’s Descent in the way that people go under ground and bad things happen.

I really thought this was just going to be a scary story about the catacombs. I imagined something like As Above So Below. The beginning was slow going, but my god the middle really dragged on. Once they were in the catacombs it took ages for anything exciting to happen. I wouldn’t call this a horror novel until the very end tbh, but it’s definitely a thriller. The last 30% of the book took a crazy left turn, and the last 15% or so had me clutching my kindle! I was stressed.

If the last part of the book didn’t happen I would be giving this one or two stars. I was honestly annoyed because I didn’t really read much about the book before so I wasn’t aware it was going to go in that direction and shift the tone so much. But I didn’t want to DNF already on book 2 of 2024 so I persevered. Am glad I did!
