*4.5 stars. I LOVED this. I was apprehensive at first just given the setting, I don’t love 18th century France. But I was depending on a strong recommendation from a friend and she was not wrong. This is a coming of age story at heart and an epic family saga that takes you for a RIDE through about 7 years time. I loved the characterization in this story, especially Barbara and Tony’s character. I need to continue in the story, hopefully later this year.

What a wonderful novel! The story and characters are so real. I will be short because I cannot wait to read Now Face to Face.

Enjoyed this very much. Koen does an amazing job with character development, ergo the length of this epic romance novel. I did not anticipate some of the plot points, which made this book a real departure from the traditional historical romance/bodice-ripper/thigh-rubber.

Immediately wanted to start the sequel.

I thought I was getting some snarky arranged marriage fic but instead it was just a slog. I thought I could handle the age difference but it just turned out to be squicky. I didn't really care for any of the characters except for the hilarious grandmother and could have done without many of the side plots, love triangles, and super creepy sex scenes. The historical bits were more interesting but it was just sooo long with so much negative stuff that I was just skimming by the end. A huge disappointment.

It was a slow start and at times I felt like quitting since it became so depressing but I pressed on and was happy I did. I am now waiting to get my hands on the sequel.

Wow, quite a book. This book had a lot going on. I really enjoyed all its scandals and passion. I will definitely read the sequel ( and prequel) eventually.

The last 200 pages are filled with unrelenting sadness (and one or two dollops of hope). Beautifully written by a woman not at all afraid to show grief reflected across several characters' perceptions and actions.

Did they never hear of EDITING?? This was painful to read, as the characters kept repeating themselves ad nauseum, with ellipses even! I stuck with it because I wanted to know how it ended. I'm rather sorry I did! I skipped about 75% of the last 100 pages just to get it over with.
