This was a strange one, John! As always, there is a lot of heart in Irving's novels - and here too, I felt care for and cared by this family. This time however, their repeated mantras were a bit overdone. As always, there are his recurring themes around sexuality, too: prostitution, age gaps, sexual violence, rape, incest. Regarding the latter, I just can't. Brother-sister incest is a huge part of this book, and I can't really articulate a more complex opinion than: I can't.  I loved Suzie, I loved the ending, I loved many passages, but I can't say I loved this book.

This book is long and excruciatingly boring. I only managed 60 pages of the cramped words and blatant incest before I had to just say ‘fuck it’ and quit.

  • i just love everything about john irving's writing
  • the scope! the wacky-but-lovable characters! the bears!
  • this one in particular really resonated with me on a personal level in a few different ways
  • made me cry many many times!
  • i think if i have any complaints it's just that after having read a few of his other works, some of the ivring-tropes can feel repetitive (bears, vienna, teacher's kid at a new england prep school, wrestling/lifting)
  • at the beginning i thought it was going to be more of a problem than it was tho and it didn't wind up bothering me

StoryGraph is asking me if I'd like to add any content warnings for this book and I honestly don't know where to start.

I thought The Hotel New Hampshire was difficult to get through in parts and I wouldn't say that it's aged well, but overall, I enjoyed it. I though characters were engaging and they felt alive, but I found that the ending was a little unsatisfying and anticlimactic. I felt the same way about A Prayer for Owen Meaney as well, so maybe John Irving's structure just doesn't do it for me. Overall though, I enjoyed it!
