Wow wow wow! I loved this one compared to the first one. All of the different POVs plus it being LGBT just made this one so fucking good. I literally cried at the end. These books are so long but I think it’s worth it

this is a spectacular sequel to [b:The Queens of Innis Lear|29982722|The Queens of Innis Lear|Tessa Gratton|https://i.gr-assets.com/images/S/compressed.photo.goodreads.com/books/1499973202l/29982722._SY75_.jpg|50382769], which I adored, with similarly gorgeous language and imagery. think A Song of Ice and Fire but with less characters/convolution and more of an opportunity to get close to the characters emotionally (although I was more immediately drawn to the Innis Lear characters and it took me a bit to warm up to the ones in LH). brutal, beautiful, and compelling.

I’m pretty sure I read this book wrong, which is why it might earn more stars from me on a reread— I assumed because it’s a retelling of Shakespeare’s Henry IV, that it would stand alone from the other book in the series, The Queens of Innis Lear. I might’ve been wrong on that one; there were a couple references to the other book I got lost in. Besides that, this is a LONG read, and in desperate need of a map and a list of characters on the first couple pages.

this was some of the YUMMIEST prose I’ve had the pleasure of reading lately— nothing on the cover does the inside justice. Tessa Gratton’s world is sparkling, colorful, and rich, breathing nature and magic. The characters basically blaze through the story— I’m particularly fond of Hal, Hotspur, and Connley— and about two thirds of the way through there’s a delightfully dramatic love pentagon.
above all else Tessa Gratton looked at Henry IV and said what if Hal and Hotspur were bitter lesbian exes and they were SO real for that

A rare addition to my DNF list. I will suffer for a long time to find the jewel of any book, but I realized I needed to give up. It's a book that assumes you've been living in its world and not that you are being introduced to it. Epic fantasies are great provided they are engaging and have plot advancement. Give me a reason to spend days immersed in your novel, and I will.
