Definitely better than the last few books. Less convoluted of a plot as well.

Meh, 2.5 stars. Had some good ideas. Felt too disjointed.

I really like the Artemis Fowl series and I also like anything that has anything about Atlantis in it. So naturally I though i would love this book. Unfortunatly I didn't like it as much as I hoped I would.

Spoilers

First Artemis isn't really Artemis in the first part of this book. A significant part of it. The person in his place was very annoying (he was supposed to be).

Second thing was Butler wasn't even with Artemis. Butler is my favorite Artemis character.

Third Atlantis is really just a prison. No mythology or anything really.

With all these things I still liked the end of the book. So I did like the book in the end just had to struggle to get there. If you like Artemis you have to read this book if you don't why the heck are you still reading this series.

Devious youth, mental health (if a bit dramatic)- love ‘em both. I would have LIVED for this series as a kiddo.

Thankfully not just another Artemis book wherein he is either a criminal or a hero, this one has something definitely wrong with Artemis and breaks a bit from the other AF stories. Kind of an odd, but enjoyable mix of the faerie setting and characters with some outerspace probes and time travel thrown in to make the story work.

To enjoy this book, you kind of have to sit back and take it all as cracky fun. You can't take anything in here too seriously, which is odd and a little unfortunate, given that the story is supposed to deal with Artemis's guilt in a somewhat serious way.

The plot and character arcs are a little weak and messy, but hey, we're mostly just biding time before the series finale.

I have a particular weakness for the Artemis Fowl books. The stories are normally a lot of fun, fast paced and enjoyable snarky and clever. This one definitely falls into the typical mode for the rest of the series. The usual characters are present and accounted for, the humor is well sprinkled throughout and the villain is over-the-top and a little ridiculous. The ending felt a little rushed but overall another great book in the series and definitely not the last.

One small quibble, beneath a spoiler warning

It really bothered me that Artemis states he can't really blame Turnball Root for his evil plotting and what he's done because he did it all for love. Love does not justify murder, kidnapping and wanton destruction. In addition, that "love" is obsessive and possessive, not the pure romantic love of fairy tales. Root deliberately keeps his wife ignorant with glamor and she's a virtual prisoner though she has never realized it. She's never had free will since the moment she met Root. There's something very sad and sick in that and the attitude that somehow all of the bad things Turnball did are ameliorated by the fact he acted out of love just rankles.

Whelp, this book is better than the last one, so there's that at least.  But I really don't know what to make of it.

Artemis Fowl's mental health has taken a nose-dive, coming down with the Atlantis Complex, a psychological disorder that seems to be a mix of paranoid schizophrenia, OCD, and DID. It is a well-known psychological disorder that affects fairy criminals that are suffering a lot of guilt.  The villain is, thankfully, not who I was expecting it to be (which means that she'll probably be the villain for the final book, siiiggghhhh), and he had the potential to be an interesting and nuanced villain except for the whole
Spoilerbrainwashing his wife thing, which makes his motives of trying to save her life less sympathetic and more "well, at least if she dies she'll be escaping this man who's held her in thrall for the last 80 years."

I'm excited for the next book, both because I'm genuinely looking forward to it after a friend of mine assured me that the ending is worth the mediocre books (I hope her opinion wasn't clouded by nostalgia goggles), and because I've been reading this series for like, two years now and I am so glad to have it done with.
