A fascinating story, sharing insights from all parts of AFL life. I love reading books written from different character's perspectives, although the world-weariness pervading most of these characters made them blend in a bit too much for me, with not enough distinct characterisation. Also, at times when a chapter finished, I wished we would return to at character to hear more about how their story developed, but we only see glimpses through the other characters' stories.
As an AFL fan, but one who doesn't live in Melbourne and so is removed from the all-consuming nature of the game, I found the stories compelling. The overall tone, however, is quite bleak, with little hope contained in the stories. While Miriam is obviously knowledgeable about the workings of an AFL club, I am not sure she is a fan. She seems more like someone who has been, or knows someone who has been, burned by the game.
An interesting read.

A light, quick read that tells the story of an AFL season from multiple perspectives. The structure has its strengths, but the constant flicking between characters mean that the heart of the book (the complicated relationship between draftees Mick and Jake) is lost and few characters are really developed. A good one for footy fans.

great timing to read this just as the AFL season starts and my footy obsession kicks back into hyperdrive. the story of an AFL draft rookie, told from the perspective(s) of 14 different characters, each capturing the essence of AFL mania that is really best understood by a southern stater. the best chapter is definitely the last - from the perspective of the footy mum - beautiful!
thanks for the reccommendation AVdB
