It's an instant classic. While much less descriptive and detailed as other Tolkien books, it was a fun read full of whimsy. It was interesting to read the book that much of modern fantasy has taken inspiration from, and it is quite clear to see why. However, most of the dwarves were underdeveloped and very much interchangeable, and some of the chapters lacked enough depth to understand what exactly was going on. It very much felt like it was written for young children, which, to be fair, it was. Not my favourite in the series, but I would recommend it to anyone for themselves or their children for a fun dive into the history of modern fantasy.

"There is more in you of good than you know, child of the kindly West. Some courage and some wisdom, blended in measure. If more of us valued food and cheer and song above hoarded gold, it would be a merrier world." - J.R.R. Tolkien, The Hobbit.

As the summer ends, so too does my journey with the Hobbit. What a lovely journey it was! My first experience with the Hobbit was when I was 11 and we were required to read it for our reading group in school. Safe to say, 11-year-old me was not a fan of Tolkien's lengthy prose and penchant for in-depth nature description; I steadfastly refused to read it! However, a whole another 11 years later, 22-year-old me thinks rather differently. Tolkien's prose may still be lengthy and his nature descriptions thorough, but I find myself loving this book! It's the perfect cosy and gripping read for the end of summer and the beginnings of our blustery & grey Scottish autumn. The characters may be infuriating at time, but that is truly what makes them so loveable. There are times when the story could have moved a little faster and we could have benefited from a faster-paced section. On the whole though, I can very much see why this is one of the world's favourite fantasies. The world is so well developed, it makes you want to jump right in and experience it for yourself (well, without all the quest chaos). It is a truly lovely tale! Me at 11 may have hated the vivid descriptions of nature, but me at 22 absolutely adored them. As I've grown older, I find I great comfort in nature writing and scenes. I don't think I need to tell you this as we have all heard of the Hobbit before but definitely give this book a go! I don't think you'll be disappointed! - C x •
