I've seen a lot of reviews complain that the ending wasn't what they expected, but I actually preferred the real ending to what I was expecting. The last third was easily my favourite part of the book and made the slog through the first half worth it. The beginning was very episodic, with each chapter bringing a new, almost unconnected adventure; invariably Gandalf or sheer luck would get them out of trouble and they'd be on their merry (albeit uncomfortable) way. It was very repetitive and frankly quite boring despite the adventures. The last third saved the book for me and I really enjoyed Bilbo's development from waiting around hoping for Gandalf to fix things, to taking matters into his own hands and finding his own bravery and ingenuity. That, and the commentary on greed, wealth, and entitlement really made this a great book for me.

Such a heart-warming story with an important lesson about greed, happiness and what's important in life. Tragic and sad at times, but overall a cozy experience despite the violence :D

but what did poor Bombur do to be treated like that, other than he was just bigger than everyone else? I felt bad for him :(
