There were fun bits, and some sweet bits, but what angered me really angered me and the ending felt rushed.

surprisingly ... decent?

the dynamic of having the male lead away at war for six months right in the middle of the book really changes the pace. it was a great change from the generic plot points of these romance novels - slow burn, together, break up, back together. but now we've got a big old gap in the middle for our heroine to get used to the small town, form alliences, explore the hero's angst ... great.

speaking of luke. he is a very interesting man who is going through a lot. but some of his actions are slightly concerning (thanksgiving in the bathroom).

harper on the other hand is your classic perfect female lead who is willing to do anything for a man she met a month ago. but she does have a lot of development on her own, too. i love the way she bonds with the family. and joni.

slightly strange how she ends up as a kind of stand in for the dead wife- staying in her old bedroom was perhaps pushing it a little bit

but overall, nice. i will read the next one
