I didn't think this was as good as Wells' adult novels, but it was still pretty good. And thanks to
Spoilerthe obnoxious cliffhanger at the end
, I will be reading the sequel when it is published.

WHAT WAS THAT ENDING?

*walks away for several minutes to deal with LEGITIMATE CHILLS*

Okay, I'm back. I might actually have given this book a five star rating for being absolutely captivating and interesting, despite being yet another YA dystopia, except for some of the questionable science and the fact that it is, in fact, yet another YA dystopia.

Overall I enjoyed it immensely -- I really like Keira and that not everyone is white, and that there was SCIENCE and a WOMAN OF COLOR IN STEM, and man, it was really exciting. Usually I'd be pretty cringey at the idea of a man writing a female main character, but this book did not make my cringe. Well, it did about the enforced pregnancy, and I think the absolutely terribleness of this could have been enforced harder, but there was a lot going on, and there were female friendships and Keira had a boyfriend the whole way through. And Marcus was adorable and lovely and THEY HAD A GOOD RELATIONSHIP WE GOT TO SEE, and yes, he was a bit of a douchenozzle at points, but he's a teenage boy, and it was about wanting to protect Keira, while the narrative sang about Keira being perfectly capable of holding her own, so I was okay with it.

Basically the bad parts were overshadowed by the good parts, so I am very happy I read this, and now am all pumped up to read the next one, cause LITERAL CHILLS at the end of this one.

This is one of the better young adult dystopics that I've read. It's relatively long for a YA dystopic novel and it's written by a man with a female lead character. Another interesting feature about it is that the heroine is not bratty at all, she's very sensible and practical but not in a Mary Sue way. The youth in this world are expected to behave as adults for a variety of reasons - a dwindling population being one of them. In addition to the population and health crisis, there is also a militant revolutionary movement and the constant threat of resumed conflict with the 'Partials' - think Cylons from Battlestar Galactica or the Silicates in Space: Above and Beyond.

As a young scientist, Kira is desperate to find a cure or a way for her people to develop an immunity to the virus RM. She's likeable as are a number of the characters. The element of romance is relatively standard but at least all of the characters involved are appealing and not annoying. I definitely want to read what happens next.

I have so many 'go to' authors, it's hard to step out and sample new ones. I'm extremely glad I did in this case.

The characters feel real are well developed, the story is believable, and I stayed up later than I meant to every night I was reading it...all signs of a great book.

Vedremo :)

This one was tough for me. I don't like it when authors screw with kids, much less babies, and while it was not harped on it was there. I understand it's pretty much the main plot point and it was handled with a decent amount of respect but I still don't like it. However, I think Dan Wells is a pretty amazing writer so I didn't dismiss the series out of hand and I'm glad out that. I like the world and the characters are well done. Even though I guessed one of the reveals before it happened they were still good. I did feel like there was disconnect between Kira and her love interest but maybe that's more how she was supposed to be written and less an actual flaw. I generally like dystopian books and this was no exception. I'm not head over heels for it but it's plenty good enough for me to keep reading.
