Honestly, I wasn't feeling this one as much.  The characters were okay but at times really annoying.  The relationship felt rushed and a bit too forced.  After they admit their feelings it’s revealed they always felt that way since they were in college… it just kinda comes out of nowhere.  Then there was the ending.  I love romance books as much as the next person but that was way too cliché and just really annoying.  I will say I did like some of the banter was pretty good and I did like the cozy summer vibes it had.

I enjoyed how meta this book was. in many ways it was a book about writer’s block and the process of writing a story. i like that the story didn’t sugarcoat on the one hand and also didn’t exaggerate the characters struggles too far so that they became unsympathetic. i wasn’t much until the way the sexual aspects of the protagonist’s relationship was described. I would have loved to have gotten more of a glimpse of what Gus’s writing had been like and how he would have written his romance novel than the more general look we got. i do plan on checking out more of the authors work in the future, though.

This book totally made me cry in the last 20 pages. I love Emily Henry’s writing, I get a solid romance, characters with depth, and it’s not all about the spice (though I’m totally here for it!). This book’s exploration of grief and reconciling the different sides we know of people (friends, family, and lovers) was really interesting and felt so real. I’m not usually a fan of the miscommunication trope, but Henry’s use of it is self-aware and feels so real- I would have held back from telling all too! And the miscommunication isn’t the main basis for the plot. So it contributed to the depth of the characters but didn’t draw out the plot. I ate this book up!

this was such a sweet book. i love the main characters so much and i found them so much more relatable than other contemporary romance characters. i really enjoyed the setting of the story.

the only thing that was off-putting about the book was how slow it felt at times. it wasn’t the whole story, there were literally pages of miscommunication and frustration that i felt were not very important. also, gus’s speech at the end about naomi really frustrated me because he basically made it sound like he was ready to give up january for naomi. like even after everything they went through he dtill sounded ready to drop january completely. apart from that, he’s definitely one of my favorite book boyfriends.

would definitely reread again ✅

my first Emily Henry was Happy Place, which I heard was uncharacteristically depressing for her books. but this one is even sadder!

the writing is good, especially the way she describes how January feels when looking at Gus, and I enjoyed the read, but I don’t like the bit of justification and false equivalencies about infidelity, or that this is essentially an “I can fix him (emotionally unavailable man)” success story lol. I can’t rate this bc IDK how to average my likes and dislikes in this case.
