this entire book was so frustrating but yk what hell yeah. i’ve been waiting for a thriller to really rile me up. christopher was the most insufferable character ever and i was hoping he’d be put behind bars for something. ANYTHING. he was just as awful as Janie.
you’re telling me that christopher took the side of a child that he met a few months ago over his own damn wife just bc this little girl was calling him “daddy”. yeah lock his ass up since he wanna ride or die for a kid who pretty much hurt everyone in his family. Janie could’ve literally stabbed him in the gut and he still would’ve been like “oh no, she didn’t mean it. she’s just having a hard time adjusting.”
hannah deserved so much better and i’m going to imagine my own hea that any possible charges on her end were dropped, she divorced christopher, and was able to keep her nursing job along with cole.

3.75* I couldn’t put it down. The ending was unsatisfying to me. The mmc was unlikeable and made it hard to get into. Overall good read has me side eyeing children though.

Lucinda Berry not only wrote a gripping thriller, but also chose the perfect voice actors! My first read of hers but will not be my last!

A story of a deranged little girl who ends up being adopted by the main characters Hannah and Christopher. I was really intrigued by this whole story and really enjoyed it all the way up to the last page. I found myself constantly thinking about the book and just wanted to finish it to know what had happened. I guessed the outcome quite early on but still enjoyed reading it, however I found the way the book ended very underwhelming and thought to myself really?! That’s it?!

Where do I even begin.
Firstly, the relationship that develops between the patient (a 6yo child) and her doctor, and eventual foster dad, is wildly inappropriate. He gives her forehead kisses the first or second time they meet, they snuggle, and she is constantly on his lap. In no way would this be allowed to happen between a patient and their doctor in real life.
There are so many mental hoops you will have to jump through to consider this story even semi-believable.
Additionally, the social worker - THE SOCIAL WORKER - tells the cops during an interview, “People always assume sexual abuse is the worst kind of abuse that a child can endure, but it’s not. It doesn’t have the kind of lasting effects that you see in kids who’ve been severely neglected.” WTF.
All that within the first 50 pages. Pick up anything else on your TBR.

Dark but brilliant
Ok, if you are looking for a book with a lovely wrapped up ending... don't read this.
If you are sensitive when it comes to abuse or violence... don't read this.
But if you want a gripping story that you just cant put down, that leaves you wanting to know more... then pick this up and read your heart out!
This was my first novel by Lucinda Berry, and it certainty won't be my last.

Horrid book. First half was good. Second half was a dumpster fire. Bad thing after bad thing after bad thing. Gave me anxiety and the ending was trash as well. I wanted to see Christopher EAT CROW
