Mouse stuck on an island. I don't get why it is so highly rated. Although I liked all the pictures.

I came across about a dozen copies of this award-winning book at the library bookstore and figured I would give it a try. Abel the mouse gets blown away in a hurricane and ends up stranded by himself on an island in the middle of a river. He discovers his own fortitude and an unguessed-at artistic talent. The ending was a bit abrupt, but the whole book was not bad.

I enjoyed the story, but I would have enjoyed it more knowing the story afterwards... that's the difference between juvenile and adult literature though I guess...

I don't normally bother to rate the zillions of kids' books I read, but this one is so profound I have to go on record with a big FIVE stars. So much wisdom & intelligence packed into this little volume. The only change I would make: have *Amanda* be the castaway, and make Abel the sweet dreamy one waiting at home. Give a female character a chance to do something interesting!

“A cute story in the beginning and the end but it was really tough for him in the middle” -10yo
