What do you get when you mix the 80s, a small-town mystery, horror, a pinch of comedy, and a magic Viking axe straight out of Heavy Metal? Why, you get Basketful of Heads! Lucky you.

This was a satisfying read from beginning to end, and Hill was in total control of the pacing and mood throughout. I liked the central characters from the first few pages, and grew to love June as it went on. I went into this with no expectations, and in fact, this was the first thing I read by Joe Hill besides reading part of the first Lock and Key trade. I’m glad to say this was a fun one.

Negative reviews of this book seem to dwell on minor things or lament that there’s too much of some other pieces of horror fiction in this story. Nonsense. There’s nothing new under the sun, folks, but as these things go, Basketful of Heads is pretty damn original and entertaining.

If you approach it with the intention of just having some bloody fun, it will deliver.

I really didn't know what to expect from this, but the description sounded potentially interesting. If this had been a novel or short story, I probably would have hated it for being overly simplistic and too silly. This kind of story can work in comic or even movie form, and it def comes across as B horror, which I am a huge fan of. However, this story is a bit cliched. It takes place in the 80s and has kinda throw back art, which makes me as a reader want to give it a break because it's old school, but it actually isn't, it's just written by an old person and meant to seem old and sort of play into the nostalgia factor. Should I really be more forgiving of older works? I dunno.
The bad guys are pretty one dimensional, just bad to give the hero something to fight and the reader something to hate. I didn't feel much fear for the main character, as she would obviously make it out alive. That said, it was still a kinda fun read and I really lik the classic comic art. I did like the final climax and overall, it was fine.

This book is great! I think the art expertly reflects the time the story takes place in. Also, some of the full page art is truly amazing. My favorite part of this is that (SPOILERS) the title of the book is a red herring. The meat of the story has little to do with said "basketful of heads". They just keep the story moving and provide some color. The real story keeps you guessing the whole time. If you're into supernatural thrillers and open to graphic novels, definitely give this a read!

I WANTED SUSPENSE AND HORROR AND JOE HILL DELIVERED!!

I'm really upset with myself for waiting this long to read this. I'd slightly heard of Joe Hill and his Hill House comics with DC but it didn't really seem like something in my alley. It wasn't until recent that I got the itching for a horror comic and had heard really good things about this title. It's fully available online so I really had nothing to lose. Needless to say I will be bingeing the rest of the 'Hill House' series because this was an amazing introduction to these comics!

The story takes place in the 80's and we follow June, who is reuniting with her boyfriend after summer break. She then proceeds to have one of the craziest couple days/nights. After some inmates escape and break into the house she's staying at she finds an old nordic axe to defend herself with and after beheading the intruder she finds that the head is still alive! There are a lot of things to unravel and June powers through what I can only imagine is a STRESSFUL night.

Joe Hill knocks it out the park with creativity. The story feels fresh but familiar and I think its cause he captures the vibes of those early 70s-80s horror films. The good ones haha. The suspense is real and there was several "HOLY FUCK" moments throughout the series. There were twists and turns all around, its a very fun and thrilling story that deserves all the hype! All with artwork from Leomacs (never heard of and still don't know who they are) and colors from Dave Stewart (who I have become a big fan of recently). Leomacs has a tasteful style that gives old school horror vibes. Very 'Tales of the crypt' and 'EC Archives' but a bit more modern of course.

Splendid spooky read that you should for sure, check it out!
