A lot happened in this volume and it kind of feels like I read two instead of one. It’s given me a lot to think about, and I’m unsure about where this story line is going.

I feel as though this volume was a builder for the next volume, was still good though!

I'm actually getting bored with Black Bird, nothing seems to be happening really. I'm still going to continue reading it because I like most of the characters, but I just wish something will happen soon. But I gave three stars because of Kyo's dad and the story of how Kyo's mom died.

Actual rating: 3.5

It's been some time since I was last reading Black Bird, it's kind of nice to come back to. The volume cover is absolutely gorgeous, if you ask me, and the chapter covers even more.

Lord Yoh was an interesting character. I really enjoyed his sudden appearance, as he revealed some of their family's past. The events he reveals to Misao actually end up being important to the plot of this series.

Sho also returns in this volume, and damn, does he ever look good in an eye patch.

I don't know if I like Kyo or not, to be honest. He obviously loves Misao and tries to do all in his power to keep her safe, but at the same time, he appears to be somewhat abusive toward her. In this volume, he even tells her that sometimes he wants to make her smile and treat her nicely, then other times he wants to be mean to her and make her cry.

I don't get it.

I also gave this an extra star purely for the last page alone.

'Misao is the bride of prophecy whose blood gives power to the demon who claims her. But most demons want to keep her power for themselves - by eating her! Now Misao is just trying to stay alive...'

In this volume, we learn more about Kyo's father and about his brother, Sho.

I was close to giving this volume only three stars because I hated how Kyo treated Misao. I've said before how much I dislike how he 'punishes' her, and he does it yet again in this volume. Why is he so jealous and rough with her? She's a bit of a moron sometimes (especially, it seems, when it comes to her mixed feelings about Sho and what happened with him), but he doesn't need to be so... mean. DISAPPROVE. >8U Though... I suppose he is a demon. :/ Blah.

That aside I enjoyed the flashback and overall plot of this volume. It explained a lot about Kyo and Sho's relationship, as well as the relationship between Kyo and his father. I liked getting to know Yoh, and I'm also really glad that
Sho has made a reappearance in this volume. I don't know what it is about him, but he's very intriguing
.

The beginning of the volume was quite slow, but it picked up pace towards the end. This seems to be a common complaint of mine about this manga series, but perhaps I'm being a bit harsh. Maybe it's just a shoujo thing. Who knows? XD

Also, for some reason this volume reaffirmed my love of Hoki (and Segami, and Zenki and, well...). Yup. I also enjoyed the little daily routine doodles. They were adorable!

Looking forward to the next volume as the series seems to be building up towards something big. I just hope that Kyo learns how to properly treat a woman sometime (though I doubt it).

Kyo's dad tells all. There's the whole backstory about how they met, fell in love, fell apart over their kids, and why he disappeared. The people in the clan feel entitled to Misao's blood and it's getting heated. Sho comes back like I fucking knew he would!

This will sort of be a catch-up review because I have forgotten to review all the other volumes as I've devoured this series pretty quickly. This volume is four stars for me.

I really do enjoy this series. Volumes 1 and 2 are a bit samey but once it gets a bit more "serious" the story improves a lot. However, I must warn new readers about potential triggers for sexual assault in the first few volumes. It's rather rife in the early volumes, both from the love interest Kyo (but, as it's a shoujo from 2008, it's portrayed as an OK thing? Which? No?) and a few of the antagonists, especially when
Kyo's brother Sho turns up. That whole scene made me uncomfortable as hell
. It's somewhat the nature of her power--demons want her blood for its healing abilities, but if they have sex with her they get super strong and powerful... After that, however, as Kyo and Misao become "official" it doesn't happen as frequently, if at all towards volume 10. Antagonists still want her blood, but are less interested in kidnapping her and are more concerned with trying to take down Kyo
because, they've finally had sex at this point, so he's much more powerful than previously
. Towards volume 10 the manga is more focused on Kyo and Misao, and it leans towards more action. As I said previously, the story gets better as it goes further along, and the questionable and uncomfortable scenes lessen considerably.

In volume 10, Kyo no longer comes across as a creep (as he's not just harassing Misao, thank God) and actually seems to care for Misao. He did seem rather cool, not cold, towards her in the first few volumes. But in volume 10 you can really see that he cares and loves her.
Heck, he calls her cute in this volume and gets embarrassed by it. That's 10/10 right there.
We love character growth. Also, even though this happened a few volumes ago (but I can't remember which one it happens it now, oops), I really love
Sagami and Ayame! They're so adorable. I hope we get to see more of them interact!
I'm here for the action. I'm in love with the art style. It's sort of similar to [a:Matsuri Hino|153732|Matsuri Hino|https://s.gr-assets.com/assets/nophoto/user/f_50x66-6a03a5c12233c941481992b82eea8d23.png] who wrote and drew [b:Vampire Knight, Vol. 1|263145|Vampire Knight, Vol. 1 (Vampire Knight, #1)|Matsuri Hino|https://i.gr-assets.com/images/S/compressed.photo.goodreads.com/books/1329232329l/263145._SY75_.jpg|255083], my all-time favourite manga.

Volume 10 is perhaps one of the best volumes in this series. It feels like something legitimately serious is going on.

I'm glad I like this manga. I bought the first 9 volumes years ago but never bothered to read past volume 2 (teenage me disliked Kyo a lot, understandably). I've bought volumes 10 to 14 from a charity website, and have now ordered the last few from eBay. I hope the rest do not disappoint.
