This was great. Fast paced, fun, exciting and well told. I really love Alyssa and H.M. There’s a few things that I have questions about but I kind of know the answer. It’s just that I’m not sure the answer makes the most sense in the world. But it’s kind of a minor point and I’m willing to suspend my disbelief. Can’t wait for Thronebreakers.

It was fun but it was also very YA. The main characters are still so immature, despite being in line for the throne. There's a lot of angst and self doubt covered by a tough exterior. But, yunno, that's exactly what it's like to be young. The author did a good job of casting young characters honestly. I'm curious about what happens in the next book!

It was your typical YA vibe which isn’t for me. I’m also not the biggest sci fi fan too. It wasn’t bad just not for me.

Enjoyable characters and plot. I also love the pro LGBTQ world.  I wish there was a bit more character development and world building though. I wanted to know more about the world these characters are in. We know there was a conflict/war in the past. What’s that about? And there are many different species; tell me more. I also wanted to know more about what the main character was thinking. She goes into a depression at one point in the book, but we barely get a glimpse at her inner turmoil.

I enjoyed this so much!

Here’s why:
• lots of fun and very fast-paced
• witty writing style that I enjoyed a lot
• Alyssa was such a badass and funny main character that had great character development (and I loved the rest of the cast as well)
• entertaining plot, fun concept and the riddles and challenges were really cool (yay for cool spaceship maneuvers and space battles as well)
• made me laugh a lot and also cry a bit
• great worldbuilding without being super confusing (loved the different planets and species)
• dealt very well with grief and also did a great job of criticizing media and government
• loved the casual diversity (pan mc and lots of LGBTQIAP+ and BIPOC side characters)

I was a bit confused about the characters’ ages and the romance felt a bit rushed in the end but overall such a fun sci-fi! I highly recommend checking it out!

pros:
- rich and cool characters
- good, clear structured and understandable storyline
- I loved the flashbacks. they were short, sweet, and perfectly placed. you needed them to further understand the characters and they added a lot of depth to them

cons:
- I have to say I wasn't really invested in the book itself. while the characters and story weren't really lacking, I just couldn't relate to or care for it. I felt for them but never really with them? Its really hard to explain, but thats why I was considering giving the book 3 stars

this is a 3.5 stars read for me
I'm definitely going to read thronebreakers tho, because I want to see how the author ends the story.
she definitely did a good job with leaving a few clues throughout the book so we can guess what kind of storylines the next book is going to entail.
