The characters were amazing though and I found to love so many of them. They pulled me through the book and I ended up caring a lot about them. And especially space monkey proved once again that himbos are the best.

Spoiler
cw: suicide
The prologue has a character on a final task that they kill themselves once completing for example.
cw: dependence/alcoholism?
In general the main character doesn't only use alcohol but, is drunk more than once and for a large period.
I would want to go on with notes however, it honestly got exhausting.
The series has the makings of an exciting sci-fi adventure. Inopportunely though, the story was challenging at the time I read it. Plus, the second in the duology is supposed to be darker. I am still going to pick up Thronechasers too but, it’s going far back in my TBR maybe to revisit the series at another time. YMMV
Moderate: Blood, Gore, Death, Emotional abuse, Murder, Grief, Violence, Vomit, and Suicide
In the author's own words: alcohol use, blood/gore, death/loss of a loved one, emotional withholding from a parental figure, murder, guilt and trauma, science fiction-related violence (i.e., blasters, spaceship battles, etc.)melaniereadsbooks's review

Oh my goodness I am obsessed with this queer-normative space world and all the amazing characters!
Captain Alyssa Farshot's world is rocked when her Uncle (who just happens to be the emperor or the universe?) dies and a Crownchase is called. During a crownchase, each prime family gets to pick one person to participate in a inter-galactic race to find the crown seal, deciphering clues and puzzles and diplomatic missions to be the first to find it and be declared emperor. Alyssa is in no way interested in being emperor, but that doesn't mean she won't participate.
I love ALL OF THE CHARACTERS in this book. I fell in love with Alyssa and Hell Monkey basically in the first chapter. Alyssa is so witty and clever and FUN, but also such a complex character that needs some major work on her feelings. Hell Monkey is so sweet and funny and perfect. Oh my gosh I love them.
The plot of this book was just as good as the characters. I was intrigued every step of the way. If you love books that revolve around games with high stakes, this is definitely the book for you! Everyone, go forth and read!
CW: death, family death/illness
Graphic: Murder
