the world building is so impressive and the SLOW BURN/tension was literally insane, done so incredibly well. rhysand and feyre might be one of the bestttttt fantasy couples. the most DIABOLICAL last 30 pages oh my GOD. ???? jaw drop multiple times (and a giggle at lucien whispering >>that<< HAHAH). i also love how the perspective on t*mlin gets totally flipped and how lucien is such an interesting character. to launch a fantasy series with a love interest who you might think is the main interest but ISN'T IN THE END AND TO TOTALLY MAKE U HATE HIM is still awesome to me (and the right choice when rhys is right there!!!! i love him). i totally get why people love this if i'm being honest, BUT the mating shit sometimes made me giggle!1!!. and also whenever she would describe something as "male". like a "male smile". like what lol?? okay! i still really like the writing and i also prefer the way she writes the risque scenes more elegantly/nicely compared to other books where it's super graphic. it feels super romantic which i enjoy. the recurring metaphor of painting relating to her soul was really cool, too. like they healed each other i...
this clears the first in every way and i absolutely love the velaris squad. defs gonna wait a bit before i continue the series tho bc it is such a task sitting down with such a mammoth of a story (but one that is very much worth it)!!! thanks emily for letting me borrow, sorry for not picking it up until you wanted it back LMAO 😚

While I'd still consider this one of my favorite books of all time, this reread fell a little flat for me. I don't know if it's because I was listening to the audiobook and I wasn't the biggest fan of the narrator, or if I've reached an age where I find specific parts of SJM's writing style a little insufferable. But overall, I still think it's a very enjoyable read. You just have to be willing to look past the flaws.

I maintain I just cannot understand why this woman is obsessed with the phrase "gobbling down" as in, eagerly taking in the details of something. It makes me think the whole cast are, like, turkeys or something. Wild.

I liked book 2 MUCH more than book 1, there are aspects of this book I wish were less rigid. Also I basically cringe everytime they say “female”

I think that the heteronormative system that sjm establishes just really got in the way of me enjoying the book. I didn’t really expect it in a fae setting (why establish sexism in a world you made up if you’re not going to engage with it critically??) Also it feels a little weird to me that sjm portrays the fae as a relatively sexually liberated society, yet “whore” carries such weight as an insult. Again, it could be interesting if she engages with it critically but it just seems a little shallow as is. Having read two of the books now, the books are really starting to lack tension/stakes for me. Everything always goes right for Feyre and none of the relationships have any chance to build (there’s potential for more tension in the relationships, but the potential is ultimately wasted). Any “tension” is based on silly miscommunications which honestly made me dislike the characters more. I’m begging sjm to let her characters have flaws!! Like how are they all perfect? It’s boring!
