This is a book about four young siblings, 2 boys and 2 girls, who are tired of living in their traditional family home. They take their cat and dog and a few other items from home, and embark on an adventure to find a new place in which to live. They stop at a tree, a pond, a cave, and at the shore. They like each of their new homes, but each of them has an issue that causes the kids to move on. As they travel from home to home they leave a few of the items that they had brought from their house and collect new tokens from each of their new homes. In the end, they return home to their house and parents.
I love the illustrations in this book. Each of the sites where the children live is depicted with many details that made me fall in love with this book as a kid. I wanted to live in each of these places too!
I think that you could use this book to show simple adventures and a longing for change. The book could also be used to show that while sometimes we may long for something new and different, often what we already have is wonderful.

The edition I read was illustrated by Dori Burn and that made it perfection!

There is something magical about the illustrations in this simple book of childhood wish fulfillment. Doris Burn took Liesel Moak Skorpen's lovely, lilting words about a family of children who were tired of living in a house (and whose parents, we see, are just as happy to see them leave for the day!), and created characters with distinct looks and reactions to the various problems their new homes presented. I loved this book as a child, and I really enjoyed pouring over the illustrations again as an adult! This book will long be a favorite of mine!

ONLY IF YOU HAVE THE 1960s version--the illustrations MAKE the book. If you want to read this one, seek out the old one, that's all black and white drawings though there's a little red on the front cover, so glad I own my old copy! But if you see the old one at a garage sale, snap it up! I spent hours looking at those drawings as do my children now.

This is one of the few books I still have from my childhood and it's still a favorite!
