i found this slow and often difficult to read, but the story was very interesting

ways in which tom ripley is relatable: idolizing europe because he can just eat cheese and do no job
ways in which he's unrelatable:
murdering his friends and acquaintances

Very good book! I didn’t realize it was a series so I was initially disappointed with the ending however I imagine it gets resolved more in the next books.

My review is tainted by the fact that I have already seen the movie (so all the juicy stuff wasn't surprising) and I read this on a cramped hot airplane.

Young criminal Tom Ripley is engaged to go overseas to Italy and persuade the playboy heir of an American shipbuilding firm to come home. But Ripley, a gifted mimic and a person of animal cunning, is also an unstable sociopath.

What will happen? And if he...makes things happen, will he get away with it?

An entertaining crime/suspense novel, the first in Highsmith's Tom Ripley series.
