꧁ Going into this I didnt really know what to expect, only that while exploring, a nine year old comes across something monstrous.  This was unsettling and did not end on a happy ever after.  It really is a story about the loss of a childhood. ꧂

*******************************************************
The summer of 1978 was relentlessly hot, and white the adults of a tiny Italian town hide away from thebheat indoors, the childrennspend their time playing games, riding their bikes and setting each other dares. "𝕎𝕖 𝕔𝕠𝕦𝕝𝕕 𝕕𝕠 𝕨𝕙𝕒𝕥𝕖𝕧𝕖𝕣 𝕨𝕖 𝕝𝕚𝕜𝕖𝕕. ℕ𝕠 𝕔𝕒𝕣𝕤 𝕖𝕧𝕖𝕣 𝕨𝕖𝕟𝕥 𝕓𝕪. 𝕋𝕙𝕖𝕣𝕖 𝕨𝕖𝕣𝕖 𝕟𝕠 𝕕𝕒𝕟𝕘𝕖𝕣𝕤. 𝔸𝕟𝕕 𝕥𝕙𝕖 𝕘𝕣𝕠𝕨𝕟-𝕦𝕡𝕤 𝕤𝕥𝕒𝕪𝕖𝕕 𝕤𝕙𝕦𝕥 𝕦𝕡 𝕚𝕟𝕕𝕠𝕠𝕣𝕤, 𝕝𝕚𝕜𝕖 𝕥𝕠𝕒𝕕𝕤 𝕨𝕒𝕚𝕥𝕚𝕟𝕘 𝕗𝕠𝕣 𝕥𝕙𝕖 𝕙𝕖𝕒𝕥 𝕥𝕠 𝕕𝕚𝕖 𝕕𝕠𝕨𝕟."

While exploring an abandoned house way outside the town, 9 year old Michele stumbles across something terrifying, which he decides to keep to himself.  As the book progresses he and we learn exactly what has happened and how the adults in the town are involved.
*******************************************************

⇒The horror in this book is subtle. Although once you realise what has happened itnis truly horrifying, however the innocence of Michele at the beginning makes it seems less that it really is.  His fear of monsters lurking in the dark, shown his innocence when those that he should fear are the people he lives with each day.

⇒At times I found this a difficult read, because of the child endangerment and abuse, however despite this, it was highly readable

This kind of book was just not for me. The subject matter was too much, I hate reading about kids suffering like this. Not to mention the ending was so vague and it feels like there's no real closure, which in this case, is deeply unsatisfying and frustrating. Think of all this foreplay with no orgasm.

I mean, the book was GOOD. The writing was stylistic (I guess as a result of being translated from Italian), the suspense and the tension were just 10/10 (I mean, I didn't ENJOY this book, but I couldn't put it down), everything in the book was so REAL. But it's just not my thing, and 90% of it left me feeling deeply uncomfortable and kind of stressed xD

Oh welp :P
