Captivating, and utterly surprising in that you don't ever find out what has happened on Earth, nor is the communication link between Augie and Sullivan a big part of the book. From reading the jacket, I expected the first 1/3 to 1/2 of the book to be a set up of the two main characters, then they would connect via radio, then we would find out what's going on with the rest of the world.
Even as I saw the last few pages dwindling before my eyes, I held out hope the mystery would be solved. And when it wasn't, I had to readjust my feelings about the book in light of what it actually was--a study of people when they are faced with total isolation. And I am still processing it in light of that, but one thing that can't be denied is that Brooks-Dalton sure can write. And paint a picture. And keep those pages turning. And regardless of my shattered expectations, that makes for a 5-star book in my mind.

I really enjoyed this. The writing is better than the plotting, or at least one aspect of the plot which is fairly apparent early on, so no big issue if you see what is coming. Other than that it is a slow meditation on isolation and missed chances. I'd like to see the George Clooney film which appears to have taken a bit of a panning, but I suspect that people may have been expecting Gravity and getting Solaris....

This post-apocalyptic scifi novel is beautifully written but holy heck, is it very SLOW. I had a hard time connecting with Augie's character but appreciated his story more after the story ended. I enjoyed Sully's storyline much more. Definitely worth a read (3-3.5 stars).

Really thoughtful book, nothing big really happens. Enjoyed it even more after watching the movie.
