This one was exceptionally wholesome yet still carried weight to the impacts of people like Jeff, and I love how both of these tied together and told a cohesive narrative about kids finding their way.

I adore this, it was so wonderful. I thought it would be another middle grade novel about a trans kid (something I was super excited to read about) but it wasn’t that and it was still amazingly enjoyable.

Rick is such a sweet boy and I love his journey through the book. He comes to understand himself and accept his labels and everyone around him. He finds his people and that’s always a beautiful thing.

As an asexual I’m always thrilled to read about others on the spectrum. It hurt when the adults around Rick told him he was too young to know how he felt or that he’d grow into it, but I’m glad Rick stood firm. He knows who he is no matter what adults say.

Also Grandpa Ray was adorable and I love is relationship with Rick. ‘Gamma Ray’ is a hilarious pun.

This book feels very satisfying to me, especially in its asexual representation and emphasis on imperfection; Not one person in this book has their hands wrapped perfectly around queer identities. It reminds us that accepting parents do not cure every awkwardness, and no matter our identities, we still have to continue to learn and broaden inclusivity (ie, when the gay teacher needed to learn about they/them as singular pronouns). Rick allows us to have grace for those who mess up, and those who are attempting to learn, and who are trying to hold us accountable. And, of course, it's a great text for any middle schooler navigating weird, changing relationships and understanding how friends impact our own reputation. All around, great.

I liked this one a little bit better than Melissa. The plot line was just a little more interesting (the rainbow spectrum vs Charlottes web play). I liked Rick’s internal conflict about his friendship with Jeff and found it very realistic. I also enjoyed Grandpa Ray.

Well, this story was just adorable. I had heard a lot about the LGBTQ books that were available for middle readers, and I wanted to read one.

I’m glad I picked up this book. I think it was very sweet a young boy has a friend who is little little bit of a bully. The young boy is exposed to a queer after school program, the boy may be a sexual.

The story is about this boy, making more positive friends, and learning a little bit about how people are different.
It was cute and harmless
