This book has followed my thoughts for such a long time, and I was relieved to find that, after rereading this book, I still enjoy it almost as much as I did when I was in the 11th grade (or so). The themes it touches, although dealt with in a radical, but spoofy ways, are not superficial. They are valid in the present day; alternative reality, fate, genetic engineering, conflict between the sexes and the generations, ecological travail, dehumanization, mundane and empty modern life versus self-awareness, caretaking and mindfulness (in some scenes, the protagonists hold meditative conversation with their own cells to bespoke them into health in order ensure anti-cancer/anti-aging). In some ways, I believe that this book influenced me at some level in life choices (career choices and such). I never understood why this book was so under-appreciated!
