This was another great story by James Rollins. This was good, but not as good as some of his others, though well worth a read. My feelings about this book could be because I am not fond of things that happen under water or in ice. Also, I did not feel as much of a connection with the characters. However, as always Rollins lures you in with a very cool mystery. LOVED the ending!

This book kept you guessing with its twists and turns. This wasn't necessarily a bad thing but after a while I started to get dizzy. There were some interesting premises here...a research lab hidden in an ice island at the polar cap and prehistoric ancestors of whales that were able to walk on land and had the ability to freeze (and thaw) themselves at will. I'm glad it had a good ending.

It could be because it was 104 out the day I read this, but the cold was really appealing! :-) Tons of action, non-stop, interesting twists and turns. Liked the whole interplay with the walking whales.

Another thrilling high-octane action adventure, this time on, in and under the ice…with monsters. Great fun with some interesting choice of characters and situations. Having the deaf researcher lost in the tunnel network being hunted by creatures in the dark was particularly memorable. It was also great to see wise-cracking Kowalski’s first adventure before he joined the Sigma Force team.

I really enjoy Rollins's mix of science and imagination. He bases his works on science and extrapolates from there. In this stand alone, he has some unsuspecting Alaskans swept up into a hunt for an ice station that is newly found. Problem is, the Russians want it too. So it is covert warfare at the top of the world.

Riveting ice adventure!

So much to love, cold climate setting (Northern Alaska, and the Arctic), creepy top-secret research lab, a cool retired search & rescue dog name Bane, and lots of likable characters and evil villains (there's a helpful list of characters).
A reporter Craig Teague is on his way to do research on a secret experimental lab when his plane was shot down, the pilot died and Craig is rescued by a Fish and Game Warden Matthew Pike. Whoever shot Craig's rent a plane pursued the two on foot. Matt took Craig to his ex-wife's cabin nearby. Jennifer Aratuk is a native and also a sheriff, she and her father John helped them escape north in her plane.
Dr. Amanda Reynolds is on an American research vessel mapping icebergs when she comes across a drifting ice facility with a WW2 Russian submarine docking at the bottom. Using her instruments, she was able to see the multi-level structure and some kind of movement inside, but this lab is said to be abandoned for almost half a century...
Ooh, it's good! It was also a bit too long and too much detail. I wish the storytelling is concise after halfway mark as I was losing patience and wanted to know the ending! I borrowed the audiobook from Hoopla. It was a decent production, a little dated so the quality isn't too great especially if you play it out loud. I also borrowed a Kindle book to read along.
