The Helm of Midnight was one of my top 20 reads of 2022, however The Cage of Dark Hours does not hit the same highs. It was still interesting, but I found it frustrating that it seemed like an entirely different magic system was used.

Y'all, when I tell you Marina Lostetter has me in a chokehold right now. I read the first book of this series, The Helm of Midnight and it was one of my favorite books ever. I immediately ordered the sequel, which I never do. The fact that I also read it within months of reading the first book?? The Cage of Dark Hours has changed me, I swear.

The Cage of Dark Hours was absolutely riveting. It was fascinating to see the effects of book one (The Helm of Midnight), while also setting up what can only be an amazing book three. (Can you tell I'm not over the ending yet?)

If you haven't yet read this series, friends, I highly, highly recommend it. It's some of the most unique and reeling worldbuilding I've ever encountered. Please read it, so I have someone else to talk to about it with? 🥺

The Helm of Midnight is one of my favorite books that I have read, and I am heartbroken that I didn't love this one nearly as much.
This sequel doesn't have the same elements that I loved about the first book and what I thought made it unique. The plot was slow, the characters weren't interesting, and the tone felt juvenile at times. There was one POV that I liked here and the world is still fascinating which is why I will still pick up the next book.

This was a solid sequel. I enjoyed it much more than the first book. I liked the characters more, the world and the magic got way more interesting, and the storyline was easier to follow. You barely see the villain but you hate his guts. The Thali Child became my favorite pov and wow the story was dark sometimes. I will definitely read book 3.
