NYT Notable Books 2019: 28/100

This one just wasn't for me. I don't love character-driven books, and this was very heavy in that regard. Hannah was a flawed character but it felt like she had very few redeeming qualities. The trial and her experience as a juror was much more interesting than her personal drama, and it felt like Ciment was trying to get a lot across in a very short book.

It was underwhelming at his best. I was reading the book because I was interested in the story of Anca and Stephanie, but the book is more Character Driving that I expected, still it was a fast read.

The juiciest thing I've read in a long time, and it's not close. Gripping, wrenching, tragic. Smart, too. I had to keep covering the rest of the page with my hand so my eyes wouldn't skip ahead (and I cried twice).
