Poppy and Harry’s story belong on my epic couples list.
Basically, Poppy is part of the Hathaway’s- a family that is unusual, unconventional, but completely devoted to each other. Because her family are very loving, they are also unprepared for what makes a typical debutante. Poppy has unsuccessful seasons because she doesn’t hide the ‘undesirable’ qualities that the ton hates- intelligence, independence. She has found someone that she loves and who loves her back, but his father disapproves of the match since she is barely aristocratic.
She meets Harry, but doesn’t know that it’s him at first. No one really knows the mysterious hotel owner Mr. Rutledge, owner of the Rutledge Hotel. She is interested and fascinated by him even though she professes love to Michael Baying. When he decides that he wants Poppy, he means to take her, even if she is in love with someone else. He goes behind her back, and ruins the courtship with her and Bayning. But he had the chance to fight for her, but instead he chose his inheritance over her. Harry purposely kisses Poppy in the gardens knowing that people were watching, thereby compromising her, leaving her with no choice but to choose to marry him.
Once she finds out that he was behind her heartbreak from Bayning, she realizes that he is not a hero but a true villain.
This book is a true redemption book on how people are flawed but they might surprise you in seeing how those mistakes shouldn’t mean to give up on someone. I love how Harry tries and tries to keep distance between them but can’t. Even though he desires her, he is also charmed by who she is.
He is somewhat damaged but the way he learns that some things are precious and much more important than pride, completely shows how he grows. The way he treats Poppy, even when he’s sure she hates him gives an idea of the potential for the good man underneath the hard walls and damage of his childhood.
Lisa Kleypas gives another outstanding story of love. Her writing, storytelling and characters are so well developed that one can’t help but get invested.

I like how this unlikely relationship developed. It felt authentic to the characters and I appreciated the slow relationship and a brutish man who honestly wasn’t brutish at all.

This was a delight to read. I finished in one day and I had a marvel of a good time going through it. Harry was a character, literally and figuratively…

“It was just that he wanted her so damned badly. And he had become accustomed to having his way, especially where women were concerned. He reflected that it probably wouldn't hurt him to learn to consider someone else's feelings. Especially if that would hasten the process of getting what he wanted.”

While he had his flaws, he had what every good man in a swoon-worthy romance should possess in spades: complete and utter devotion to the woman he loves.

Poppy, on the other hand, was a sweetheart. She was smart, funny, witty, and both quick and clumsy on her feet. However, what really made this book fun was the side characters. The staff of Harry’s hotel truly cared about him and their quips and banter were so fun. Poppy’s family was so sweet I have a cavity.

I’m glad I read this book first because her older sisters got married in the previous books and it was interesting to see the family more developed with the new husbands and the roles they each had. Leo and Beatrix are the 2 Hathaways yet to be married but I want to read Win’s book, Seduce Me at Sunrise, because I love a snappy overprotective and loving husband like Kev Merripen.

“Merripen had responded with a volley of Romany that no one except Cam could understand. And Cam refused to translate a word of it, claiming there were no English equivalents and that was a good thing.”

The book also surprised me how diverse it was. The characters all excel in a certain field of knowledge whether it be business, poetry, reading, engineering, or animal taming, it was pleasant to see oddities and trinkets from all over the world embellish the tale of Harry and Poppy.

Since this was my first Lisa Kleypas book and she’s well known for her historical romances, I was unsure what I would think of her writing. After finishing this book, I can say with upmost certainty that I love how she writes. The husbands seem pretty redundant in terms of macho personality traits but I’m a sucker for the grumpy tall ones, so I don’t mind. The spicy scenes gave me goosebumps! They were described so openly but classy at the same time? But also oozed ravenous desire and uncontrolled pleasure??? I don’t know how she did it, I just know she did.

And did it very well ;))) *hehehe

* Translation: I’m pushing my eyebrows up repeatedly and slightly lowering my face with a wicked smirk.

Definitely my favorite of this series. I enjoyed watching Poppy and Harry fall in love over the course of the book.
