I tried. Twice. I really thought I was going to like this one. I wanted to know how it would end, but 58% through and I'm just so bored I stopped caring altogether.

'The Seven Deaths of Evelyn Hardcastle' took some brain power while reading, and I had to slow down my reading to take it all in, but this wasn't a negative at all. I am glad that I read the book, and I am glad that I made it to the end, but did it set my world alight? No.

How can anyone say that the plot was not unique? I loved the concept so much, it was different to a typical 'Groundhog day' type wake up in that it was a different host every day, more so, each host had different strengths and weaknesses, different voices and personalities even with Aiden at the helm.

I found that there were some genuine twists and turns that I enjoyed, and I was so intrigued by the ending and what would come of Anna and Aiden. On the other hand there were some parts where I wanted to smack Aiden upside one of his many heads because other elements seemed obvious.
There was a constant tension of who can I trust and who should I suspect? What was the bigger game? It definitely kept me thinking throughout.

HOWEVER.

There was far too much dilly-dallying for me. So much repetition. Wake up in one host and we live the day, great. But the next day we would then have to relive half of the previous day in the new host - "Bell would be waking up in the forest about now..." and off we would go recapping his day again. I just wanted to focus on the host of the day with maybe snippets or brief reminders about the previous hosts where necessary.
I ended up skimming through some of these parts genuinely just shouting in my head "I KNOW THIS ALREADY!" The first couple of hosts weren't too bad because you kind of needed the support, but by host 6 or 7 we were still recapping things that had happened with Bell as host numero uno.

Loved the idea of this novel but I have to be honest in that I didn't quite love the handling.

My main complaint about this book is that the mechanics of the time loop are not super well explained at the beginning of the book (or maybe I was just not smart enough to understand it right away). That's the main reason why I took off a star other than that there are a LOT of characters to keep track of and it can get very overwhelming. Every day for 8 days, the main character, Aiden Bishop, switches bodies at a party. What I didn't understand was that the EXACT same day is repeating, and Aiden is just seeing it from a different point of view. So he converges with his other selves doing different things on different days throughout each day. My strange inability to understand this concept from the get-go made understanding the first 150 pages of this book a nightmare.
After that, the book really came into focus and I was really able to enjoy it. I don't read a lot of mystery, but I really enjoyed this and consider it the best mystery I've ever read. Highly recommend, except don't do what I did and completely miss the main plot point and then wind up confused for the first half of the book.
