I received this eARC excerpt from Tor on NetGalley in exchange for an honest review. This does not affect my opinion of this book in any way.

This was an interesting retelling of King Lear, but it didn't exactly bring me joy. I was intrigued by it but I didn't find it an "enjoyable" read. The magic system was just too dark and gory for me. I didn't connect to the characters and it was too long. So many chapters could've been removed without changing the plot at all. I'm not sorry I read this and it was thought-provoking, but it wasn't my fave.

DNF But gave it 2 stars because the writing is beautiful, truly, truly beautiful. But it is sooo slow! the pace is like trudging throw slow drying cement, albeit very beautiful, poetic cement. I really wanted to love this and make it work but I just couldn't get more than 30% into it. I had to force myself to pick up the book and read and no one should read that way if they have a choice. I really REALLY wanted to love this book and I tried so hard because I love Shakespeare and Lear and the fantasy genre and I was all for badass women fighting it out for the throne. But it was too slow moving for me. I hope to one day pick it up again, when I have more time and my to-read pile is not so large and full of shiny new books. Just not today.

There was much to love here with the beautiful prose and rich character development. The pacing was slower than I would have liked. The multiple points of view could be disengaging because they were so frequent.

Still, the magic system and world building were fascinating and I loved the diverse characters.
