"I understood then what was wrong with everyone. One of the things. It was obvious: they were mentally, spiritually, emotionally trapped in 2007."

So good. The prose was rich but somehow direct. The jumping between Mathilde's narration, Hermia's narration and excerpts from Black Modernisms was always smooth and excellently-paced. There's so much here to enjoy. I loved how the Lote society mystery unfolded and how Mathilde's situation was always infused with some tension and uneasiness due to the people at the residency and their inability to tolerate queerness, blackness and femininity. I also loved that I was never able to tell where the relationship between Mathilde and Griselda was going, as well as many of the other characters like Erskine-Lily or Hector. I almost wish there has been an extra twenty pages because I wanted to spend more time with Mathilde, but I also think the ending is more interesting for being open-ended.
