Short and sweet little novel on grief and love. Steveโ€™s narration is so fun- I just love the way he does Grantโ€™s voice.

I loved this book!! It would've been a 5 star for me if I didn't sometimes feel like I was reading a long stream of consciousness (I felt like Maisie at Patrick sometimes: WHAT ARE YOU TALKING ABOUT!!) and understood more of the movie/TV references haha. But the characters are so great, I love all of them, and their journey together is really beautiful and real. I felt like the author did a great job of balancing funny and grief, and I really became attached to all of them. Patrick and Emily Emory also had great chemistry!! And of course the kids and Patrick ๐Ÿฅบ๐Ÿ’ž

patrickโ€™s life is flipped upside down when his best friend/sister in law dies. he has no time to process this loss, because he quickly has to become the guardian of his niece & nephew, while his brother goes to rehab

gup (gay uncle patrick) is a single, 43 year old former actor. heโ€™s never had children, so heโ€™s a little underprepared to suddenly be caring for two children. but he takes maisie & grant in under his wing and they all learn some new things

โ€”

this book was sooo heartwarmingly cute. i love the relationship that developed between gup, maisie, and grant. it was a rockyish unorthodox start, but everything & everyone turned out okay! i absolutely hated clara & iโ€™m so glad that gup stood up to her. itโ€™s also important to remember that gup never had kids, heโ€™s still processing the loss of the love of his life & his sister in law, and this was all sprung on him with no notice! i think he did an amazing job at taking care of maisie & grant. he just had to find his footing, so to speak

grief was a huge theme in this book and it was written so beautifully. chapter 19 & 20, where gup really talked about joe and everything that happened during his last few days were so heartbreaking. i hate that joeโ€™s family treated him that way & werenโ€™t accepting. he loved joe just as much, if not MORE than they did. i also enjoyed that gup helping maisie and grant with the loss of their mom also helped him to heal a little bit and focus on better ways to cope & live his life after losing joe

i listened to the audiobook for this one & i didnโ€™t know that it was narrated by steven rowley, the author, until i went to listen. i absolutely loved this! he did an amazing job & i love that all of the emotions he wanted conveyed through his book were able to be done with such accuracy through the audiobook. since he narrated it himself. i highly suggest the audiobook for the guncle, if you decide to read it!

This book was exceptional! After the death of his best friend/sister in law, Patrick takes in his niece and nephew while their dad goes to rehab. Patrick doesnโ€™t know how to be a parent, but he can be a guncle! So he sets forth to teach the kids how to live fabulously while being truly yourself and hopefully work through some grief. This book was so funny and snarky and deep and emotional. Everyone needs to read this.
