A lot of throwaway lines make excellent work of tearing down the 'money spinner' that are the X-Men franchise. The racially-charged writing seems to kick up a notch here, as does the sexual assault side of things. At this point it seems like Ennis really doesn't have much more worth saying in the series.

Bullet Review:

Foul-mouthed. Violent. Gory. Obscene. Graphic. By this point, if those things don't bug you, you are in for a penny, in for a pound. I won't lie, it's at times too graphic for me, but I'm rather invested in Hughie's journey (him looking like Simon Pegg helps too).

In this volume, it's a direct hit at the X-Men and all the X-properties. On a good day, I barely know my way around Marvel or DC, but I didn't even attempt to touch any X-Men other than some of Storm's single issues, so I probably miss 90% of the digs (I did get the Wolverine knockoff though).

It's almost prescient how these comics were (and telling how this became a series on Amazon Video). The 00's and 10's saw the rise of the comic book movies, and I believe we may have just hit saturation peak with Avengers Endgame. I am no prognosticator, but everything comes in cycles, and it seems likely that the wave of squeaky clean superheroes will be making way for something more nuanced and sadly realistic. (I know, I know, I very much wanted to "hang out" with Robert Downey Jr's Tony Stark, Chris Evans' Captain America, Chris Hemsworth's Thor, and Tom Hiddleston's Loki too.)

Not good
Has its moments, but overall my love for disturbing and over-the-top writing can not make me like this arc.

finally some actual plot with some action. shame everything is nicely wrapped up by the end of it. more juvenile toilet humour but at least it’s just frat bros being frat bros.

Not my favourite of the series. A blood soaked read as ever, but felt the plot was a bit weak and didn’t pack the same punch as other volumes. As ever, a crazy, wild ride though.

So . . . much . . violence . . and depth, and care, and politics, and and and -

Once again, Ennis has left me speechless. Love it. Just want more now.

The fourth volume of Garth Ennis' The Boys is not a fun read. It is heavy on backstory, irreverent to the point of ridiculousness and quite frankly a big jumbled mess. This is of course the middle part of a multi volume arc but it is also the point where I will take a break to read something better.

The premise remains compelling, while Ennis continues to air out the worst bits of his brain while he's at it.

This one takes on the X-Men concept. It might be a little lost on the current readers of comics who don't remember the 90's when there were about...8,000 X-Teams?

Let's see how many I can remember:
X-Men
X-Force
X-Factor
eXcalibur (pretty sure they tried some bullshit like that)
Generation X
X-Man
X-Girlfriends
X-Marks The Spot
xXx: The Return of Xander Cage (little tip: search isn't case-sensitive enough to just type in xXx and get a Vin Diesel movie)
XXL
Xzibit
Solve for X
Revolution X
Pedestrian Xing
Examine Your Zipper
X-Holes
Ess-Eee-X
Roof Axess

...okay, that's enough of that.
