Women's History Month!!

This book was a delightful surprise. Focusing in on several women's personal stories, it not only tells the transformation of the travel industry through the eyes of stewardesses, but a glimpse of US history at large during the 1960s. This was a really cool perspective on the Vietnam War and I feel like I learned a lot. It was a great quick read for me. Glad this cover caught my eye!

Parts of this were fascinating, others a bit redundant. It touched on a lot of different topics and followed four women, and as a result it didn't always feel cohesive.

Read it because:
Impulse read from Hoopla, totally intrigued by the cover

Reminded me of:
The Women (Kristin Hannah) with the emphasis on women's roles during the Vietnam War.

This was such a cool book! I love how the author is telling us the stewardesses stories as the narrator. It was such an interesting read, and I learned so much about the rules/regulations, norms of the business, and the aid provided during the Vietnam war.

I think I was expecting a salacious tale about the happenings of Pan Am Stewardesses and their passengers, but what this story really was is a detailed and historical account of the impact that these ladies had on travel, tourism, the war efforts, and most importantly women's rights.  The ladies of Pan Am set the stage for the EEOC and did the groundbreaking work that was necessary for women to secure their place in the world on their own.  I learned a lot about what these ladies went through and I loved that the story was told through the lens of several women and their experiences.  The story was thoughtful, well-researched and very enjoyable.  The audiobook narrator did an excellent job making these stories fascinating and interesting.

This deep dive into the Pan Am stewardess era (the rise and ultimate decline) was interesting  for its exploration of a topic I thought I knew but didn’t as well as how the author chose to tell the story - through individual accounts and experiences of actual fight attendants. I  found the author’s coverage of the Vietnam War particularly enlightening, both the role of the commercial airlines and stewardesses and how the war was viewed from their eyes. These women were key in this part of history and they played a key role in the women’s liberation movement, too. Really interesting.
