Thanks first to PRHAudio for this complimentary audiobook! I was all about a murder mystery on a cruise ship and I got it. This book has some good twists but I just didn't like the hapless main character. I also can't remember her name. :/
Also maybe a spoiler?? So beware!?

The ending was kind of messed up. Like everyone ends up being complicit in framing someone and it just ends ha not a detailed spoiler but I was defo disappointed in whatever her name was.

In Diana Urban's Lying in the Deep readers are faced with a person's worst fear, being trapped on a ship with a murderer. In this YA retelling of Death on the Nile, we follow Jade as she embarks on her COB (Campus on Board) journey in hopes of getting away from her ex-boyfriend, Silas, and her ex-best friend, Lainey after a betrayal has led them together. I really enjoyed the isolation plot and felt it really added to the story, we are quickly introduced to our main "cast" of characters and at first it might be harder to follow along with, but thanks to them being picked off one by one it made it easier to follow along.

Having not known that this was a Death on the Nile retelling I wasn't able to guess the ending, but I have read some mention that to them it was obvious following the original story! I felt like the book dragged on at a few points (often with repetitive plot points that could have been edited out), and really enjoyed how the book picked up in the last 75% and ended with a plot twist!

This book is filled with DRAMA, something I needed at the time but could understand to some readers how it could come off. If you're looking for a fast-paced YA with loads of drama, this one is for you!

*I received a copy of this book from the publisher in exchange for my honest review*

When Jade's long-term boyfriend Silas breaks up with her over text to date her best-friend Lainey, she is left feeling broken-hearted and betrayed. Months ago Jade and Lainey planned a semester-a-broad on a cruise ship together, but Jade is sure Lainey is no longer coming when her room arrangement goes back to pending. When Lainey shows up on the first day, with Silas in tow, Jade is devastated. Then, a body appears and Jade finds herself the number one suspect in a murder case.

I really liked this drama-filled story! It was so over-the-top ridiculous I ate up every second of it. I've now discovered I quite like the locked room mystery trope, and I loved the cruise ship setting! The characters definitely don't feel like college students with how incredibly immature and whiny they can be (especially Jade), but it was still enjoyable. The side characters were intriguing, and I liked following the mystery trying to piece together the motives each person had. I wasn't the biggest fan of the romance though, and would have liked it better if it was left out. I liked the ending and hadn't seen it coming although a lot of people say it was rather predictable if you know the story of Death on the Nile, but I've never read it so I was taken by surprise.

Overall, I thought it was fun with a lot of drama thrown in to keep you entertained.

The beginning of the book was really very slow for me. I put my audiobook speed at double because it felt like a romance novel masquerading as a mystery. Once it picks up it gets more interesting. But fun delivery in the end. I like women supporting women and the beginning kind of set it up to be cat fight-y. The main character's boyfriend dumps her and then he and her best friend start dating, but main character spends the whole time blaming and hating on the best friend with no reason to assume that best friend did anything wrong. Like... let's blame the guy who dumped you and not hate on the girl who did nothing wrong? Anyways, did not love that.
