Identity crisis is a story where things happen. And then x dies, and then x dies, and then x is doing something suspicious!
There is a good set up. But I could see it going downhill fast when it’s revealed the murder victim was pregnant, because of course. There is numerous character deaths but we as readers are rarely left enough time to consider the consequences before the next thing happens. Then again, if we did we might realize how these look deaths are used to prop up a story as “mature”.
The ending is a real page turner as the real killer has a stupid motive and engages in even stupider methods, yet somehow it took this many pages for the identity to be realized. Maybe if someone just waited for the autopsy to finish…
I enjoyed the art, though.

Bullet Review:

Very decent. I saw in a friend's review that it felt a lot like Watchmen, and I concur. For whatever reason, all the elements worked for me; in particular, I grew really fond of Green Arrow/Ollie. It's also overdramatic and pretentious as hell, but there's worse out there.

Why’d this have to make me like the elongated man???

But seriously, a new light rendered to the DC universe and a really good ending

This was a good graphic novel exploring the complexities of what it means to be a superhero. Though not having much background for this particular moment in the DC universe I don't think I had the whole emotional response others would have. I think if these are your characters this is really powerful and moving, but I felt a bit like the interloper who comes to the family event when everything goes boom but does not understand what led up to it.

I've been meaning to read Identity Crises for quite a while, somehow being sure that I would love it. The idea of a whodunit set in the DC Universe written by a crime author was very exciting, and I like books where heroes face real life situations.

Who killed the wife of the Elongated Man ? Who is chasing our heroes' loved ones ? Why on earth are we dealing with so many secondary characters ? Who knew Captain Boomerang and The Calculator were still operational ?
Ehhh. The story stars off quite well. Meltzer sets up an interesting mystery - How does the villain get in, kill Sue Dibney without leaving a single trace? This keeps us intrigued until... it all falls apart. The plot development is clumsy and completely vapid, and the attempts at shock value lack substance (Using rape as a plot device ?)
More importantly, the resolution is a big letdown. The motive of the killer seems idiotic, especially after such a long build-up.

Despite the good character drama and emotion, I found Identity Crisis to be disappointing, morose, depressing and -sorry to say- pointless.

Several heroes are killed, and it’s eventually revealed that it is the Atoms ex-wife killing these people.
